31.08.2008 Gérard Grisey (Sunday Times)

Gérard Grisey, who died a decade ago, is known as a crucial figure in the development of spectral music, which derives its shapes and colours from the analysis of wave forms. That makes Grisey sound rather dry. Far from it. Rather, he uses process to harness and make coherent a lyrical, fascinated mind. The result is an immensely beguiling balance of impassioned expression and carefully calculated form. Thus, Le Temps et l’écume (1989) is a captivating study of live and electronic sounds, and Les Chants de l’amour (1984), for 12 voices, is a 28-section panoply of sounds and phrases united by the theme of love. Both works are beautifully performed.
